Dr. Hoogwerf is a native of Minnesota who received his Medical School, Residency and Endocrinology Fellowship training at the University of Minnesota and the Hennepin County Medical Center.  He spent 4 years on the faculty of the University of Minnesota before moving to the Cleveland Clinic in 1985 where he is a staff physician in the Department of Endocrinology, a member of the Cardiology Prevention Clinic. He was Program Director for the Endocrinology Fellowship program from 1991-1996 and the Internal Medicine Residency Program from 1997-2004.  He has academic appointments at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, the Ohio State University and Penn State University.

        He is past president of the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland.  He is active with American Diabetes Association including past membership on the Minnesota and Ohio affiliate boards, the Professional Practice Committee, Chairman of the Council on Nutritional Sciences and Metabolism, and a member of the 1994, 2002 and 2006 Nutrition Guidelines Task Force Groups.  He was a member of the ADA National Board from 1998-2001, Chairman of the ADA Publications Policy Committee from 2000-2002.

        He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of the Endocrine Society, a charter member of AACE, a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology and a member of the American Heart Association.

        His clinical and research interests are Diabetes mellitus and Lipid Disorders. He has published more than 150 articles in the invited and reviewed literature. He has been actively involved in several large multi center clinical trials including the LRC-CPPT, DCCT (pilot phase), ETDRS, Post CABG, HOPE, HOPE-TOO, ACCORD, DREAM, ORIGIN and ONTARGET/TRANSCEND.
