Biography: Jorge Plutzky, MD

        Jorge Plutzky, MD, is a practicing cardiologist who is board certified in internal medicine and in the subspecialty of cardiovascular disease. He is the Director of the Vascular Disease Prevention Program, which includes the Lipid/Prevention Clinic and BWH/Partners Premature Atherosclerosis Center, all at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Dr. Plutzky is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He also directs a basic science laboratory that investigates mechanisms contributing to the development of atherosclerosis in patients with various metabolic disorders, including diabetes. This work focuses on the transcriptional regulation of vascular responses through nuclear receptors like PPARs. Dr. Plutzky's expertise in the intersection of PPARs, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, and diabetes is widely renowned as evident in his role as one of four co-chairs of the International Lorenzini PPAR meeting; he also serves as an advisor to the Food and Drug Administration; and is a member of the scientific organizing committee for the Annual World Congress on the Insulin Resistance Syndrome. Dr. Plutzky is a highly sought-after lecturer nationally and internationally. Widely published in these areas in both clinical and basic science journals, Dr. Plutzky and his laboratory have received several major research awards. Most recently he was awarded The Eugene Braunwald Teaching Awards for Excellence in the Teaching of Clinical Cardiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital; the Ernest Klenk Lectureship, and his laboratory received the Louis N. and Arnold M. Katz Basic Science Prize from the American Heart Association. He is a manuscript reviewer for many medical journals, including Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, American Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and New England Journal of Medicine; he served as an Associate Editor for Prevention/Lipidsfor the journal Vascular Medicine from 1996 to 2006

        Dr. Plutzky is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology (ACC), the Society for Vascular Medicine and Biology, and a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, ACC Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease Committee, ACC Prevention Task Force, the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the ADA Scientific Sessions Planning Committee, the Massachusetts Medical Society, the National Lipid Association Northeast Chapter Board of Directors, and the North American Vascular Biology Organization. He also serves as an Outside Reviewer for the National Heart Lung Blood Institute Program Project Grants and has recently been named to the Endocrine and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration’s Division of Endocrine and Metabolic Drug products. Dr. Plutzky is an active volunteer with the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association, and a member of the Executive Committee of the American Heart Association’s Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism, the Clinical Lipidology and Thrombosis Committee, and the Basic Sciences Council. He also serves as an advisor to Hispanic college and medical students and offers primary cardiology care for Hispanic patients.

        Dr. Plutzky received his Bachelor of Arts degree With Highest Honors from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, in 1981. In 1986, he received his MD from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill. He completed his internship, residency in internal medicine, and cardiology fellowship all at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He served as a Chief Medical Resident at West Roxbury Veteran’s Administration Hospital. During this time, he also completed a research fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
