1,500 Clinicians, 55 World-Renowned Clinical Experts, and 21 Medical Societies Convene in Boston for the 4th Annual Cardiometabolic Health Congress

Boston, September 10, 2009 – The 2009 Cardiometabolic Health Congress (CMHC) will hold its fourth annual meeting October 7–10, 2009, at the Sheraton Boston Hotel. “The current national debate on health care reform and health care cost has begun to focus attention on the issue of cardiometabolic risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease related to obesity, which is the greatest threat to our nation’s health. The CMHC is a unique forum of clinicians, scientists and health care providers providing state-of-the-art information on this key health issue,” said Christie Ballantyne, MD, professor of medicine and chief of the Section of Atherosclerosis and Vascular Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, and director of the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center and Baylor College of Medicine.

According to C. Ronald Kahn, MD, Mary K. Iacocca Professor of Medicine at Harvard School of Medicine and vice chairman of the board of Joslin Diabetes Center, “Diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome are increasing at epidemic rates. If we don’t reverse course, the long-term complications of these diseases will be the greatest challenge in health care for the 21st century.” In response, the CMHC will convene 55 world-renowned experts in cardiometabolic health to educate thousands of clinicians on current strategies for the prevention, diagnosis and management of type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity, thrombosis, chronic kidney disease and related comorbidities.

The CMHC is supported by 21 professional medical organizations, including the American College of Cardiology, the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, the National Kidney Foundation, the Endocrine Society and the American Society of Hypertension, among many others.

“The CMHC provides a concentrated and efficient way to hear from the leaders in cardiometabolic health and have access to the latest information in this fast-moving and medically important field,” said Peter Libby, MD, Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Mallinckrodt Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

The 2009 CMHC is co-chaired by Christie M. Ballantyne, MD; Robert H. Eckel, MD; Richard W. Nesto, MD; and Jay S. Skyler, MD.
