Biography: Silva Arslanian, MD
Silva Arslanian, MD

Silva Arslanian, M.D., is the Richard L. Day Endowed Professor of Pediatrics, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Pediatric Clinical and Translational Research Center at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, Director of the NIH-funded Diabetes Fellowship Training (T32) and Pediatric Diabetes Scholars Program (K12), and Director of the Weight Management & Wellness Center.

Dr. Arslanian obtained her medical degree from the American University of Beirut and completed her pediatric residency training at the same institution. She completed her fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Arslanian is funded by NIH, Research Foundations and Pharmaceutical Companies. Her research focus is the investigation of the pathophysiology of insulin resistance during childhood growth and development, the metabolic syndrome, racial differences in insulin sensitivity and secretion, obesity and Type 2 diabetes in childhood. She was an investigator in the DCCT (Diabetes Control and Complications Trial) for type 1 diabetes. She is the Pittsburgh PI of a multicenter NIH-funded trial for TODAY (Treatment Options of type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth). She has participated in several clinical trials of type 1 and type 2 diabetes treatment in children. She was a member of the Maternal and Child Health Study Section, National Institutes of Health, she is a member of the NCRR CTSA Pediatric Oversight Committee, she is on the Board of Directors of the Endocrine Fellows Foundation, and serves as a consultant to the National Institutes of Health, the Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the American Diabetes Association (ADA), International Study of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD), International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the European Medicines Agency (EMEA), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and several pharmaceutical companies. She serves as an editor, referee, and reviewer for many journals. Dr. Arslanian has been an invited lecturer, symposium speaker, and chairperson at various international congresses and symposia in addition to being the recipient of several awards.
