Biography: Rhonda Bentley-Lewis, MD, MBA, MMSc

Rhonda Bentley-Lewis, MD, MBA, MMScRhonda Bentley-Lewis is an Assistant in Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Diabetes Center and the Manager of Trainee Affairs for the MGH Multicultural Affairs Office. She earned her A.B. from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, her Doctorate in Medicine from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine, and her Master’s in Business Administration from The Wharton School with a focus on healthcare management. She completed both her internal medicine residency and endocrinology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. During her fellowship training, she earned a Master’s in Medical Science degree as valedictorian from Harvard Medical School with a focus on clinical investigation.

Dr. Bentley- Lewis is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and is board certified in both internal medicine and endocrinology. Her clinical practice includes the management of pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes and diabetes in pregnancy. Her research has focused on the investigation of hormonal mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease risk factors and the role played by race/ethnicity. She is the recipient of an NIH/NCRR Career Development Award (K23) which is funding her examination of the rennin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and racial differences in vascular function. She has also recently received a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program Award supporting the extension of her study of cardiovascular disease risk and racial/ethnic differences into the field of gestational diabetes mellitus. She was named a Health Disparities Scholar by the NIH/NCMHD for her pursuit of work in these areas and has received several Travel Awards and a Women in Endocrinology Young Investigator Award for her research.

Dr. Bentley- Lewis is an active member of The Endocrine Society, Women in Endocrinology, the American Diabetes Association, and the American Heart Association. She serves on The Endocrine Society Scientific and Educational Programs Committee and served on a Task Force which produced a white paper titled “Increasing Minority Participation in Clinical Research.” She is also a member of the Steering Committee for the American College of Cardiology Foundation/The Endocrine Society educational initiative titled, “Type 2 Diabetes and Coincident Disease Risk: Addressing Unmet Needs Among the Interdisciplinary Healthcare Team.”

Dr. Bentley-Lewis is particularly committed to education and plays a significant role in underserved communities. She speaks regularly on diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk prevention and management and serves as the Medical Director for the Health Ministry of the Morning Star Baptist Church in Mattapan, MA. She has earned a Partners HealthCare, Inc. Partners in Excellence award for her service to the community.
