John E. Hall is the Arthur C. Guyton Professor and Chair of Physiology and Biophysics, Director of the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, and Director of the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence in Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). Hall received his B.S. at Kent State University, a PhD in physiology at Michigan State University, and postdoctoral training at UMMC before joining the faculty in 1975.
Hall’s major research interests include cardiovascular and renal physiology, mechanisms of hypertension, obesity and metabolic disorders. His research has been funded continuously from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute since 1975 and he has been Director of an NIH Program Project grant since 1988. He has authored or co-authored over 600 publications and has written or edited 21 books, including the Textbook of Medical Physiology which is the leading medical physiology textbook and has been published in 22 languages since 1996. He is former Editor-in-Chief of Hypertension, former Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Physiology: Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, and serves on the editorial boards of several international journals.
Hall previously served as President of the American Physiological Society (APS), President of the Inter-American Society of Hypertension (ASH), Chair of the Committee of Scientific Councils, American Heart Association (AHA), and Chair of the Council for High Blood Pressure Research, AHA. He also has served on the Executive Committees of the ASH, the International Society of Hypertension, the International Union of Physiological Sciences, and the National Board of Directors of the AHA.
Hall’s awards include the International Society of Hypertension Franz Volhard Award for Outstanding Research, the AHA Novartis Award for Hypertension Research, the AHA Award of Meritorious Achievement, Ray G. Daggs Award of the APS, Association of Chairs of Departments of Physiology Distinguished Service Award, Distinguished Achievement Award of the AHA Council for High Blood Pressure Research, International Society of Hypertension Distinguished Membership Award, Richard Bright Award of the ASH, Harry Goldblatt Award of the AHA, Lewis Dahl Award of the AHA, Lifetime Achievement Award of the Inter-American Society of Hypertension, Robert Tigerstedt Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society of Hypertension, Ernest Starling Award of the APS, Distinguished Research Achievement Award of the AHA -Mississippi Affiliate, Lifetime Achievement Award of COSEHC, A. Ross McIntyre Award, the Marion Young Scholar Award of the ASH, NIH Career Development Award, A.P. Barnard Distinguished Professorship and Billy S. Guyton Distinguished Professorship of the University of Mississippi, Excellence Award of the Mississippi Technology Alliance and inducted into Mississippi Innovators Hall of Fame, honorary doctorate from Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Romania), Visitante Ilustre de Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Nacional de Tucuman, Argentina, Distinguished Alumni Award and inducted into the Kent State University College of Education, Health and Human Services Hall of Fame, and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Professor of the Year Award.
Hall has mentored over 150 postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and medical student researchers. Many have established their own successful research programs; at least 7 of his trainees have become department chairs/directors or dean. Hall has received several awards for teaching excellence, including “All Star Professor” and “Basic Science Professor of the Year” selected by the medical student body and he was inducted into the Norman C. Nelson Order for Teaching Excellence at UMMC.
