Dr. Matthew J. Sorrentino is a Professor of Medicine in the Section of Cardiology at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Chicago in 1984 and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Society. He completed his Internship and Residency and Chief Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago Hospitals. He then completed a Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Chicago and joined the Cardiology faculty in 1991. In 1994 he was named the Director of Clinical Programs for the Cardiology Section at the University of Chicago. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine in 1998 and Professor of Medicine in 2009. He was awarded the Outstanding Clinical Service Award at the University of Chicago. In 2014, he was named Director of Outpatient Services in Cardiology. In 2016, he was named Vice Chair of Clinical Operations for the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Sorrentino is a non-invasive Preventive Cardiologist with research interests in hyperlipidemia and hypertension. In 1999, he was designated a Specialist in Hypertension by the American Society of Hypertension. He is known for his extensive lectures, teaching and writing about Preventive Cardiology. He teaches in and directs continuing medical education courses and board review courses nationally and internationally. He wrote and edited the book “Hyperlipidemia in Primary Care” published in 2011 by Humana Press. He co-edited the textbook “Hypertension: a companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease” published in 2017. Dr. Sorrentino served as the North American Editor of the Journal of Geriatric Cardiology, a joint venture with the Institute of Geriatric Cardiology in Beijing, China, for five years. In addition, he was a host on ReachMD, a satellite and web-based radio station for medical professionals delivering medical content and CME courses. Dr. Sorrentino was honored as one of the top Cardiologists in the Chicago area in 2000 and again from 2008 through 2016. In 2011, he was named best doctor for Women’s health. He is a long time member of the American Heart Association and served on the Board of the Directors of the Midwest Affiliate of the AHA. He is a fellow in the American College of Cardiology and served as a delegate to the Illinois Chapter of the ACC. He is a fellow of the American Society of Hypertension. In 2011, he was named Associate Director of the Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence at the University of Chicago. The Bucksbaum Institute has been developed to study the doctor-patient relationship.
