Sonia Caprio is Professor of Pediatrics (Endocrinology) and an internationally recognised authority on patient-oriented research in childhood obesity. Her work uses sophisticated but relatively non-invasive techniques to evaluate novel clinical observations and pathophysiological questions across all age groups.

She is the Principal Investigator on three RO1 grants to study obesity and type 2 diabetes in youth, and holds a K24 Award for patient-oriented research. Since 2002, she has been part of a NIDDK-sponsored multi-centre trial for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes in youth. In 2003 she received the Bayer Scholar Award for Research in Diabetes.

She is a member of the NIDDK Study Section of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases B Subcommittee, the FDA Advisory Endocrinology and Metabolism Committee, and an ad hoc member of the IPOD NIDDK Study Section. Dr Caprio has pioneered work on insulin resistance, fatty liver disease and the metabolic syndrome in obese youth and has recently entered the field of brain imaging with a new protocol looking at neural functioning of feeding centres in obese youth.
