About

Sunder Mudaliar, MD trained in India, England and the United States and is Board-Certified in Endocrinology. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California in San Diego with research interests focused on the clinical aspects of diabetes and its treatment. He is an Investigator in several landmark studies including the NIH-sponsored Diabetes Prevention Program Outcome Study, “DPPOS” which is a continuation of the earlier DPP study which showed the benefits of intensive lifestyle and metformin in decreasing the progression to diabetes in patients with pre-diabetes; the NIH-DCCT/EDIC Study which is the long-term observational follow-up of the cohort originally recruited into the original Diabetes Control and Complications Trial and the NIH-GRADE study which is evaluating the relative cost-effectiveness of four commonly used anti-diabetic medications when used in combination with metformin, in patients with recent-onset type 2 diabetes.. Dr. Mudaliar is active in seeing patients and teaching and has published more than 180 original articles in peer-reviewed journals (including the New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet) and has written 40 book chapters and Invited Reviews.
