About

Our team has made major strides to unravel the basis for kidney disease. We have expertise in developing phenotype analysis using imaging, molecular and biochemical methods, genomics, microarray, proteomics, lipidomics, and metabolomics studies. Our recent multi-disciplinary studies have employed systems biology approaches to understand novel mechanisms related to obesity-related complications, diabetic kidney disease and to identify novel therapies. Our recent studies with multi-omics have established a role for mitochondrial dysfunction in diabetic complications. Network analysis led to the identification of hub proteins, which are major drivers of reduced function and tubulo-interstitial disease in progressive chronic kidney disease. Our current projects are focused on building the tools for precision medicine and identifying novel biomarkers and therapeutics, determining the role of mitochondrial function in acute and chronic organ dysfunction, and developing the framework for systems biology and machine learning. Our Center for Precision Medicine at UT Health San Antonio is supported by the UT STARS program, NIH, Department of Defense, JDRF and the VA. Our work has been supported by the NIH with continuous funding for the past 30 years and we have published in the top biomedical journals, including Science, PNAS, JCI, Nature Medicine, JASN, Kidney International, AJP-Renal, Diabetes, Diabetes Care, AJN, JBC and Cell Metabolism.
