About

Dr. Sarah Hallberg is an internationally recognized leader in nutritional management of Type 2 Diabetes and other metabolic diseases. Dr. Hallberg founded IU Health Arnett’s Medically Supervised Weight Loss Program. She is the primary investigator for the largest and longest ever clinical trial examining a non-surgical intervention for the reversal of type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Hallberg’s research has far reaching implications for public health. Her study was cited by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards of Care for Diabetes in 2019, 2020 and in the latest Nutrition Recommendation Consensus paper published in 2019 when the ADA guidelines were changed to endorse a low carbohydrate eating pattern.

Education and Training

Dr. Hallberg's credentials include: Board Certified Internal Medicine by American Board of Internal Medicine, Board Certified Obesity Medicine by American Board of Obesity Medicine, Board Certified in Lipidology by American Board of Clinical Lipidology, and ACSM Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist Certified.

She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in kinesiology and exercise science from Illinois State University and her degree in medicine from Des Moines University.

Professional Highlights

She is Chair of the Board of Directors of The Nutrition Coalition, a nonprofit that aims to educate the public and policymakers about the need to strengthen national nutrition policy. The Nutrition Coalition does not support any specific diet, but rather seeks rigorous scientific review for guidelines, and was instrumental in obtaining Congressional support for the 2017 National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine review of the guideline process. It is also the only nutrition organization that does not take funding from any industry.

Dr. Hallberg is a Fellow in the Aspen Institute’s Health Innovator Fellowship and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. She is a Registered Exercise Physiologist and a Fellow of the Obesity Medicine Association and the National Lipid Association. Dr Hallberg speaks internationally on nutrition and type 2 diabetes and has had opinion pieces on the subject published in many nationally recognized media outlets including the New York Times. Her TEDx talk on the subject has been viewed over 8 million times.
