Nutrition is a critical aspect of cardiometabolic health, however, it is often not included as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for cardiometabolic patients. Given the lack of formal and continuing education training that clinicians receive on nutrition, many are not well-equipped to address it, which can exacerbate the morbidity and mortality of cardiometabolic disease. Furthermore, there are many controversies as to what optimal nutritional plans consist of, leaving clinicians more puzzled about how to approach this topic in clinical practice.
Can we move beyond the controversies on nutrition and find common ground? What are some practical messages to focus on? How can we tailor nutritional plans or advice based on existing comorbidities? How do we find the time to give nutrition advice? During this meeting, you will have the opportunity to hear on these topics and more from a multidisciplinary faculty panel.
Jo Ann S. Carson, PhD, RD, FAHA recently retired as a Professor of Clinical Nutrition. For over four decades at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center she focused on nutrition education, helping students gain knowledge and skills to improve their own nutritional habits and those of their patients to prevent chronic disease, including cardiovascular disease.
