About

Dr. Hallberg was an internationally recognized leader in nutritional management of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and other metabolic diseases. She founded the Indiana University Health Arnett’s Medically Supervised Weight Loss Program, and was the primary investigator for the largest and longest ever clinical trial examining a nonsurgical intervention for the reversal of T2D.

Dr. Hallberg’s research had far-reaching implications for public health. Her work was cited by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards of Care for Diabetes in 2019 and 2020, and in the 2019 Nutrition Recommendation Consensus paper published when ADA guidelines were changed to endorse low-carbohydrate eating patterns.

Dr. Hallberg passed away in March 2022 after battling cancer since 2017. She was open about having stage IV lung cancer despite being a nonsmoker, and published a touching blog in 2020 detailing her experience as a wife, mother, and cancer patient amid the COVID-19 pandemic. She was a pioneer in metabolic conditions such as T2D, and is greatly missed by Cardiometabolic Health Congress and the entire medical community.

Education and Training

Dr. Hallberg received her Bachelor and Master Degrees in Kinesiology and Exercise Science from Illinois State University and her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree from Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences.

Professional Highlights

Dr. Hallberg chaired the board of directors at The Nutrition Coalition, a nonprofit organization that aims to educate the public and policymakers about the need to strengthen national nutrition policy. The Nutrition Coalition does not support any specific diet, but rather seeks rigorous scientific review for guidelines and was instrumental in obtaining congressional support for the 2017 National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine review of the guideline process. It is also the only nutrition organization that does not take funding from any industry.

Dr. Hallberg was a fellow of the Aspen Institute’s Health Innovator Fellowship and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. A registered exercise physiologist and a fellow of the Obesity Medicine Association and the National Lipid Association, Dr Hallberg spoke internationally on nutrition and T2D; her opinion pieces on the subject were published in many nationally recognized media outlets including the New York Times. Her TEDx talk on this subject has been viewed 8.6 million times.
