About

Dr. Garvey is Professor of Nutritional Sciences and Chair of the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is also a staff physician and a Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Centers (GRECC) Investigator at Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Dr. Garvey earned his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in Missouri. He served an internship and residency in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine. He subsequently became a clinical and research fellow in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, followed by another clinical and research fellowship at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

Research interests of Dr. Garvey include the metabolic, molecular, and genetic pathogenesis of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and obesity. He is also interested in the cellular and molecular biology of cell and animal models, metabolic investigations of human subjects on a clinical research ward, and genetic epidemiology. Dr. Garvey is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, and the American Diabetes Association, among other professional organizations. He has served on the editorial board of Diabetes and has authored or coauthored many articles that have appeared in such peer-reviewed publications as The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, and The Journal of Clinical Investigation.
