Confronting the Silent Killer: Advancing Hypertension Awareness and Action

May is High Blood Pressure Education Month

It’s time to elevate awareness around hypertension—the silent killer affecting millions of Americans—and in support, we’re offering a special incentive to attend this year’s annual Cardiometabolic Health Congress (CMHC) in Boston.

This month is National High Blood Pressure Education Month — the perfect opportunity for healthcare professionals to intensify efforts in combating hypertension, a leading contributor to heart disease and stroke. According to the American Journal of Hypertension (AJH), hypertension affects nearly half of all adults in the United States — and when measured as a BP ≥140/90 mm Hg — is present in some 1.3 billion adults globally.

In support of this educational campaign, we’re offering a $100 discount through May on registration for our milestone 20th anniversary Cardiometabolic Health Congress, Oct. 23–25, in Boston. It’s an invaluable opportunity to enhance your knowledge, connect with like-minded professionals, and take home practical clinical pearls to your practice. Hypertension, the Silent Killer

The morbidity and mortality associated with hypertension is substantial, including increased rates of coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, heart failure, vascular dementia, and other conditions. Over the past decades, rates of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy — including chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension, and preeclampsia/eclampsia — have also risen, resulting in severe consequences.

The AJH also reports that of the nearly 92 million American adults with hypertension and in need of medication and lifestyle changes, almost three quarters of them remain uncontrolled and at risk. The problem is especially persistent among Black patients, who have been identified in studies as the racial group most likely to miss out on treatment intensification to control blood pressure.

Take Action

By leveraging available resources and taking a proactive approach, healthcare professionals can make significant strides in reducing hypertension in their communities.

  • Educate: Inform patients about the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring and the risks associated with uncontrolled hypertension.
  • Engage: Encourage lifestyle modifications, such as adopting the DASH diet, increasing physical activity, and reducing sodium intake.
  • Empower: Support patients in self-monitoring and provide tools for tracking their blood pressure readings.
  • Evaluate: Regularly assess treatment efficacy and adjust plans as necessary to achieve optimal blood pressure control.
