Allan J. Collins, MD, FACP, director of the Chronic Disease Research Group and Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota, has more than 30 years of experience in nephrology and ESRD treatment. He is also the executive director of the new Peer Kidney Care Initiative, a collaborative quality initiative that leverages public and private data sources to inform patients, physicians, dialysis provider organizations, payers, and state and federal governments about the state of dialysis patient care. From 1999-2014, Dr. Collins served as director and principal investigator of the United States Renal Data System Coordinating Center, the NIH/NIDDK-sponsored surveillance system for CKD and ESRD in the U.S. He received his medical degree from Wayne State University and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and his fellowship in Nephrology at Hennepin County Medical Center, University of Minnesota.

Dr. Collins has published more than 225 articles, 600 abstracts, and 20 book chapters, and has given more than 365 invited presentations. Dr. Collins' clinical experience and research have focused on acute and chronic care of ESRD and chronic kidney disease patients and prospective and retrospective clinical studies on dialysis techniques and associated outcomes. He has also worked extensively with high-efficiency dialysis and therapy prescription, the technical elements of dialysis, billing systems (ICD-10 and CPT-4 claims elements), and computer systems and operations. He has held several leadership roles at the National Kidney Foundation, serving as president for two years, as well as on the NKF scientific advisory board for six years, and with the Kidney Dialysis Outcomes Quality Initiative. He also served on the International Society of Nephrology's Commission for the Global Advancement of Nephrology Committee. In 2014, he received the American Society of Nephrology Belding H. Scribner Award, in honor of his contributions to the field of Nephrology.
