Barbara Millen



Dr. Millen is professor of Family Medicine in Nutrition, Boston University School of Medicine. She is the Director of the Framingham Nutrition Studies which for the past 20 years have examined relationships between nutritional risk and a wide variety of health outcomes including: cardiovascular disease, obesity, and the Metabolic Syndrome. Her research interests pertain to the nutritional epidemiology of cardiovascular disease risk; the efficacy of preventive nutrition interventions for obesity and chronic disease risk reduction in adult and minority populations; nutrition and healthful aging; nutrition and health communications; and nutrition policy and program planning.

Among Dr. Millen's collaborative research investigations are studies on nutritional risk and health outcomes in frail, minority elderly; international initiatives to reduce population chronic disease risk and to promote health aging; innovative intervention methods to reduce obesity and chronic diseases in adult female and male populations; the efficacy of community-based nutrition interventions; and food insecurity in urban populations. She is also involved in multi-disciplinary investigations on innovative methods of nutrition and health communications with younger and older adult populations. Within these diverse and rich research settings, she has supervised over 200 masters and doctoral students and offers ongoing opportunities for students in graduate programs in the School of Medicine and Public Health.
