Joshua Samuels



Joshua Samuels is a Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine in the Division of Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension at the McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas in Houston.

A native Houstonian, he graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. Dr. Samuels received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in 1995 and studied in a Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatric Residency at the University of Rochester from 1995-1999. Following his residency, Dr. Samuels returned to Houston where, in 2003, he completed a combined adult and pediatric nephrology fellowship at the UT Health Science Center at Houston. He has remained on faculty ever since. During fellowship, Dr. Samuels earned a Master’s degree in Public Health from the UT School of Public Health with a focus on Epidemiology and clinical investigation. His academic appointment includes clinical care, clinical research, and academic teaching.

Currently board certified in General Pediatrics, Nephrology, and Pediatric Nephrology, and a certified Specialist in Clinical Hypertension, Dr. Samuels’ clinical and research interests are in the fields of Pediatric Hypertension and Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). Dr. Samuels is director of the Houston Pediatric and Adolescent Hypertension Program (HPAHP) at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Current research focuses on the blood pressure measurement, circadian pattern of blood pressure variability, and the epidemiology of childhood high blood pressure.

Dr. Samuels has published over 80 peer reviewed scholarly articles. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Society of Nephrology, and the American Heart Association. As a teacher, Dr. Samuels is fellowship director of the UT Houston Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension training program and a member of the school’s curriculum committee. He gives lectures for medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty not only covering nephrology topics but also Epidemiology, critical appraisal, and Evidence Based Medicine. He is a member of the University of Texas Academy of Master Educators, has received multiple Dean’s teaching awards, and has been an invited lecturer about pediatric hypertension at both national and international meetings. Dr. Samuels has been happily married for over 22 years and has 3 children.
